MEK is a colorless, fairly volatile liquid with a fresh minty odor reminiscent of Acetone. As a solvent, it is similar to Acetone, but is slower to evaporate and boils at a higher temperature. The vapors are heavier than air. It is partially soluble in water.

MEK is an industrial solvent with many applications. It is used in the manufacture of plastics, textiles, lacquer, varnish, paint remover, adhesives, cements, sealants, printing inks, cosmetics, magnetic tapes, artificial leather, and transparent paper. It is used in dry erase markers. It may be used as a cleaning solvent, i.e. for electronics or for sterilizing needles, syringes or surgical/dental instruments. It is used in processes involving gums, resins, cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate. It is used as a plastic welding agent. It is used for making wax from petroleum. It may also be used as a denaturant in denatured alcohols, or for making other chemicals.
Both liquid and vapor of this product are highly flammable. Personal protective equipment should be worn while handling this material. Use only outdoors in a well ventilated area, and avoid breathing vapors. In case of skin contact, seek medical attention immediately. Wash face, hands, and any exposed skin thoroughly after handling. Product should be kept away from heat, flame, sparks or other ignition sources. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while using this product. When storing, keep container tightly closed.
