What is Hydrogen Peroxide? In this short story, we imagine what chemicals would be like if they were people. Hydrogen Peroxide is represented by our fictional character, the bubbly “Miss Hydrogen Peroxide”- affectionately known by her friends as “Hy”. It is set in a textile factory, since one of the main uses for the chemical is bleaching textiles. Enjoy!
The morning bell rang out over the ValeChem Textiles compound, echoing between the industrial buildings and warehouses. Inside the dye room, steam curled from rows of giant drums, and the scent of cotton, bleach, and optimism filled the air.
In the middle of it all, bubbling and bustling in that refreshing way she had, was Miss Hydrogen Peroxide. “Good morning, gorgeous fibers!” Hy sang out, tossing her gloved hands into the air. “Let’s get you fresh, clean, and ready for color!”
(What is Hydrogen Peroxide? Also known as H₂O₂, it is a powerful oxidizer commonly used in textile bleaching. It is typically preferred for whitening certain types of natural fibers like cotton, wool, and silk.)
Loved by all her friends for her sunny, simple personality, Hy was bright-eyed, pale-blonde, and constantly fizzing with energy. You never quite knew whether she was about to break into a dance or suddenly foam up over some unexpected encounter. Either way, most people knew to give her a little space!
(Hydrogen Peroxide is chemically a simple product. Made of 2 hydrogens and 2 oxygens bonded together, it is basically water with an extra oxygen molecule attached. It’s stable in solution, but when it comes into contact with almost anything, it is quick to release the extra oxygen molecule. Then, it bubbles & bubbles until it finally fizzes out to become just – water. This is how it oxidizes the surfaces it comes in contact with.)
“Hey, Hy,” called one of the techs as he wheeled over a bin of unprocessed fabric. “Got another batch of fabric for you. Actually, I’m not sure if this will go to you or Lady Bleach – will you give it a try first?”
“Ooooh,” she bounced on her toes, excitedly. “Of course! Do I love a challenge!”
(Depending on the fabric, Hydrogen Peroxide may not be able to lift all stains, all the time, through oxidation. If this is the case, bleach will usually do the trick.)
Hy loved her work – even the challenges – at the textile factory. She’d had other jobs before- most recently at a water treatment facility. She had been let go for accidentally creating harmful byproducts. She’d interviewed then for a position with a house cleaning company – but Mrs. Isopropyl’s daughter had interviewed as well, and with qualifications Hy did not have, had been hired instead.
(Hydrogen Peroxide is commonly used for water treatment, although if it is creating harmful byproducts, they may choose to stop using it. And although both Hydrogen Peroxide and Isopropyl Alcohol can be used to disinfect, 99% IPA is an EPA-registered disinfectant, and usually a better choice.)
Now, she eyed Lady Bleach, hard at work across the room, whitening – was it, polyester, maybe? Lady Bleach could be a bit harsher on her fabrics, which was why they often asked Hy to do her magic first when they had a new type of fabric. Eagerly, she reached for the pile.
But an hour later, she admitted defeat. The tech came and took the fabric away and carried it across to Lady Bleach. “Better luck next time,” he called as he walked away.
Undaunted, Hy dove into the rest of her work. By lunchtime, her sleeves were damp, her goggles fogged, and her hair smelled faintly of ozone—but her fabric was stunning. White, bright, and ready for dye.
She sat in the breakroom sipping a smoothie, bubbling with pride.
“Hey Hy,” said the dye tech, sliding into the seat next to her. “You ever think about slowing down a bit?”
“Slowing down?” she repeated, feigning surprise. “Why would I do that? I oxidize. It’s literally my thing.”
“Right,” he joked. “You’re not just bubbly—you’re extra reactive.”
She laughed. “That’s what makes me unforgettable.”
(“Miss Hydrogen Peroxide” – H₂O₂ – is used for everything from textile processing and disinfection to hair bleaching and rocket propulsion. She’s powerful, unpredictable, and a little intense—but when you need a clean start, she’s your girl.)
